Brushing with Braces

When you wear braces, food and plaque can accumulate near your wires as well as brackets. That is why you must brush your teeth after each meal. Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush that has a small head and fluoride toothpaste. You can also use an electric toothbrush to clean better.
This is how you brush with braces:
  • Every time, brush for at least two minutes.
  • Gently place the toothbrush against your gums at a 45-degree angle.
  • Use small, gentle circles to clean around your braces, brackets, and wires.
  • Don’t forget to brush the inside of your teeth as well as the chewing surfaces.
  • Be patient and be gentle so you don’t damage your braces.
If you are not sure which toothbrush or type of toothpaste would be right for you, just ask us—we would be happy to assist you in selecting the proper products.

Flossing with Braces

Flossing with braces can feel a little tricky at first, but it’s very necessary. Flossing removes food particles and plaque between teeth and under gum lines, stopping cavities and gum issues before they start.
The following are the steps on how to floss with braces:
Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss specifically to slide under the wire.
Gently slide the floss between your teeth after wrapping it around your fingertips.
Slide it up and down on both sides of the teeth below the gum line.
Repeat for every tooth.
If regular floss isn’t working well for you, ask us about using a water flosser. It’s an excellent tool that employs water to get between your teeth and around your braces.

Additional Tips for a Healthy Smile with Braces

In order to keep your teeth and braces in good condition, use these tips:

Use fluoride toothpaste

It will keep your enamel strong and help prevent cavities.
Avoid the intake of sticky and sugary foods

They can get stuck in your braces and lead to plaque buildup.

Rinse with mouthwash
Select a fluoride mouthwash that doesn’t contain alcohol to help combat bacteria and harden your teeth.
Visit an orthodontist regularly
Don’t forget to visit your regular orthodontist near you for cleanings and checkups of your mouth, as well as braces!
