Types of Retainers

1. Removable Retainers

Wire Retainers (Hawley Retainers)

These have a metal wire that goes across your front teeth. The wire is attached to a plastic piece that fits into the roof of your mouth (upper retainer) or behind your lower teeth. The wire can be adjusted if small changes are needed.

Clear Retainers (Essix Retainers)

These look like clear aligners and are made from a mold of your teeth. They fit over your teeth like a thin tray. Some cover all your teeth, and some just cover the front teeth. Many patients like them because they’re not easy to see.

2. Fixed Retainers

These are small wires that are bonded (glued) behind your top or bottom front teeth. They stay in place all the time, often for many years. You don’t need to take them out or remember to wear them.

Pros and Cons of Each Retainer

Removable Retainers

Pros:

You can take them out when you eat or brush your teeth.

They’re easier to clean than fixed retainers.

Cons:

They can be lost or broken if not kept in a case.

You need to remember to wear them every day as directed.

Fixed Retainers

Pros:

You don’t have to worry about forgetting to wear them.

They stay in your mouth full-time, which helps keep your teeth in place.

Cons:

You’ll need to take extra care when brushing and flossing.

Flossing may require the use of floss threaders to clean around the wire.
