What is a Palatal Expander?

A metal tool that is placed in the upper part of your mouth is called a palatal expander. It is fixed to your upper molars. It expands slowly and gently by applying pressure to the two halves of the top jaw, causing them to move apart. This is necessary when the top jaw is too small or when there is crowding (not enough space) for permanent teeth.

Why You May Require a Palatal Expander?

How Does It Work?

When you turn the key, the expander gently presses on your upper molars. Gradually, this pressure causes the bones in your top jaw to shift and expand. It is not painful but causes a minimal pressure or tension sensation in your mouth, nose, or head for a short while after each adjustment. This is normal and subsides very quickly.

After the expansion is done to where you want it, you’ll continue wearing the appliance for several additional months. This allows the new bone to develop and prevents your jaw from reverting back to its original form.

How to Change the Palatal Expander?

Our orthodontist will demonstrate just how you should change the expander. These are the steps you or your parent will take:

Step 1: Find a bright space and gently tip your head back so the roof of your mouth is easy to see.

Step 2: Put the key provided into the small hole in the center of the expander and make sure it’s secure.

Step 3: Move the key towards the rear of your mouth. When you do this, you will observe the front segment of the expander turn and a new hole emerge. The rotation stops when the key reaches the back of the expander.

Step 4: Push the key down and towards your tongue slowly to eject it. The next hole is now prepared for the next rotation.

Taking Care of Your Expander

To keep your mouth clean, gently brush the area around the expander.
