TADs in Woodridge, IL

At Girgis & Ito Orthodontics,
we use Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) to make your orthodontic treatment faster, easier, and more comfortable. These are small tools made from titanium that help your teeth move better when you wear braces. In some cases, TADs in Woodridge, IL, can even be used instead of headgear.

What Are TADs?

TAD stands for Temporary Anchorage Device. It’s a very small screw made of titanium that your orthodontist places in your mouth to help guide how your teeth move. TADs give extra support so your teeth move in the right direction. They are “temporary,” which means they are only used during part of your treatment and are taken out when they are no longer needed.

How Are TADs Placed?

Placing a TAD is a simple and quick procedure done right here in our office. Here’s what happens:
First, we use a strong numbing medicine (anesthetic) so you don’t feel pain.
Once the area is numb, the TAD is placed gently through the gum into the jawbone.
You might feel a little pressure, but most patients say it doesn’t hurt.
After it’s in place, the TAD starts working right away.
Once it has done its job, we remove it. Taking out a TAD only takes a few minutes and doesn’t hurt.

What If the TAD Feels Uncomfortable?

Most people feel fine after getting a TAD, but if you do feel sore, you can take Tylenol® (acetaminophen) to help with the pain. If the discomfort doesn’t go away after a few days, please call us. We’re here to help and make sure everything is okay.

How Do I Keep My TAD Clean?

Keeping your TADs near you clean is very important. You should:
Brush your teeth at least three times a day.
When we place your TAD, we’ll also give you an antimicrobial mouthwash. You should use this twice a day to help keep germs away and keep your mouth healthy.
