Retainer Instructions

At Girgis & Ito Orthodontics, we want to help you take good care of your retainer. A retainer helps your teeth stay in the right place after your braces come off. If you don’t wear it the right way, your teeth might move again. That’s why we’ve given simple instructions to help you.

When to Wear Your Retainer

Wear your retainer all the time unless your orthodontist in Woodridge, IL, tells you something different. This means day and night. The only time you should take it out is when you’re eating, brushing your teeth, or swimming.

Keep It Safe

Always put your retainer in its case when it’s not in your mouth. Never wrap it in a napkin, leave it in your pocket, or place it on a table. Retainers can easily get lost or broken—especially at school or restaurants. Also, pets love to chew on retainers, so keep them away from them.

Cleaning Your Retainer

Clean your retainer every day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm (not hot) water. Hot water can change its shape and make it not fit right. You can also use a cleaner made for dental appliances, but remember—this does not replace brushing. Brushing removes plaque and keeps the retainer smelling fresh.

Speaking with Your Retainer

It may feel strange to speak with your retainer at first, and that’s normal. To get used to it faster, try reading out loud or singing. With practice, your speech will sound normal again.

Be Careful – Retainers Can Break

Retainers are delicate and can break if you don’t handle them properly. Don’t try to adjust it by yourself. If it feels uncomfortable, gets lost, or breaks, call our office right away. We’re here to help.

Bring It to Your Appointments

Always bring your retainer to your orthodontic appointments. We will check to ensure it still fits well and is doing its job.

Avoid Heat and Water Damage

Keep your retainer away from:
Hot water
Car dashboards
Pockets
Washing machines
Napkins
Also, remove your retainer before swimming.

Retainers Last a Long Time with Good Care

Retainers can last for many years if you take care of them. Replacing a retainer can be expensive, so keeping it safe and clean is very important.
