Orthodontic FAQs

At what age should my child have an initial orthodontist visit?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their initial orthodontic examination when they are approximately seven years old. Your child will have a combination of primary teeth at this time. This assists us in detecting and correcting problems early, sometimes preventing larger ones from developing in the future.
We provide various forms of braces to assist with crooked, crowded, or spaced teeth. They are:
  • Metal braces
  • Ceramic braces
  • Clear aligners such as Invisalign
Everyone is different. Most everyone wears braces for about two years. Some people are able to get through it quicker, and some take a little longer. It really just depends on how much the teeth need to be moved. Our orthodontist in Woodridge, IL, will monitor your progress at check-ups and keep you on track with your treatment.
Braces may be a bit uncomfortable for a couple of days when they are first applied or when they are tightened. It is normal. If it is bothering you or is troublesome, you can take medication. Braces should not hurt all the time.
Every one to two weeks, you will receive a new set of aligners. They’re all slightly different, so you move your teeth a little bit further each time. We’ll let you know when to switch to the next set and check progress at appointments.
Initially, soft foods are ideal. Some good options include:
  • Pasta
  • Vegetables cooked
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Soup
  • Soft fruits
  • Oatmeal
  • Refrain from consuming sticky, crunchy, or hard foods.
For toddlers and teenagers, Invisalign is a popular choice. Invisalign Teen is specifically made for younger people. Instead of braces, clear, removable trays can be employed to fix things like crowded teeth, gaps, and bite issues. We will look to see if it’s right for your child.
Cleaning your teeth is very important when you wear braces. Here’s how you should do it:
  • Brush using a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day.
  • Floss once a day between teeth as well as around the braces
  • Use alcohol-free mouthwash two times a day
  • Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods.
  • Don’t miss your routine dental cleanings
Once your braces are removed, you will be required to wear a retainer. You can use the retainer to keep your teeth in the correct position and avoid moving back.
Braces straighten teeth but also accomplish much more. They can:
  • Make it simpler to brush and floss your teeth
  • Decrease your chances of getting cavities and gum disease
  • Help correct jaw joint problems
  • Enhance the way you speak and eat
Invisalign employs a sequence of clear plastic trays known as aligners. Every stage of aligners gradually moves your teeth into a better position. You’ll be wearing the aligners most of the day, but you’ll be able to remove them to eat, brush, and floss.
Braces might take a little getting used to, but they won’t stop you from doing the things you enjoy. We offer different types of treatment that fit your daily routine and help keep your smile healthy and strong.
Call us if you encounter any of these:
  • Persistent pain
  • Broken or loose wires, brackets
  • You have injured your mouth
  • Bleeding or swollen gums
